Our client, the Port of Barcelona, has inaugurated the Nou Passeig del Trencaones and other spaces located around the Marina Vela totaling 36,481 m² for use by citizens of the Catalan capital. The development of these spaces has been possible thanks to the public-private partnership between the Port, which has planned this field, and Marina Vela, the company which was awarded the public concession.
In a press statement, the Port of Barcelona has indicated that Marina Vela, the new facility for sports and leisure boats located in Nova Bocana (Port Vell), has invested 30 million euros in this area.
Marina Vela will soon inaugurate the most modern dry dock in the world. It is an automated system that identifies vessels, lifts and puts them into a warehouse with a system of robotic arms and rails, leaving them in their customised berth using a system of storage robotic stacker cranes. This cutting-edge technology has many benefits not only for those who love sailing, but also for residents and the environment.
In this way, the development of the project, which has been carried out by IDASA and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, has led to a fully automatic dry dock with space for 222 vessels up to 9 metres in length and 4 tonnes in weight. The maintenance management system for these facilities, infrastructure and machinery will be ROSMIMAN®.
The automated dock system has robotic arms, inspired by those used in industries like the automotive sector, which lift the vessel and put it into a tunnel leading into the dry dock. This way, they pass over the marina road without bothering pedestrians, shops or restaurants, which will all soon bring life into this area. Having chosen this sophisticated system, therefore, will allow residents and tourists alike to enjoy this space even more.

About the Barcelona Port Authority (APB)
Barcelona Port Authority (APB), also known by the trade name Port of Barcelona, is a Spanish port authority, dependent on the public body State Ports of the Ministry of Development. The Port of Barcelona is Catalonia’s main transportation and services infrastructure, the second port in Spain in terms of traffic and the first in terms of billing and value of goods. The 112 maritime lines, operated by 163 shipowners providing regular connections to 850 ports on five continents, with a weekly regularity in many cases, place it by far as the first Spanish port for international traffic.
The Port is the gateway to a hinterland that exceeds state borders. It has about 40 specialized and multipurpose terminals to serve all different types of traffic. Likewise, the commercial port is divided into a logistics port (Logistics Activities Zone – ZAL) and an urban port (Port Vell) open to the public.
About Marina Vela
Marina Vela is the recreational marina in Barcelona, which opened its doors this past summer. It is located at the northern mouth of the port, next to Hotel W (the emblematic building designed by Ricard Bofill, often called the Sail) and Plaça Rosa dels Vents, near the Barceloneta neighbourhood. With this new facility, the Barcelona Port Authority aims to open this port up to residents, with new public, retail and recreational spaces, in addition to providing more berths.
